Low Fire Planters in July

In July, I started a project to use up my red and white low fire clay. It had to be reclaimed in buckets because it had hardened. Amy, a new neighbor  who had just broken her pot, wanted to learn how to do it and was really enchanted by the process.

Amy sifting through the lumps of the red clay.  It took a long time to dry to a consistency that we could wedge and use.

It was important not to mix the red and white together, even though they were both cone 05, the same as bisque ware.

The red clay had a lot of water in it so it took weeks and meanwhile, we got the white clay usable.

Two people working consistently together with clay get to know each other pretty well. We did a few other side projects including painting her jumpsuit for Burning Man and turning the sourdough bread starter project (epic fail on my part) into a paper mache bunny hat.

The first glazed kiln load was white clay

The interiors are so good, it’s hard to put dirt in there to grow plants.

Amy caught on quickly and we used all the low fire clay.

It’s great to finish up. Now I will go back to Cone 5, all white clay and use different glazes.

Cat pot on top, scraffito pots with red slip on white carved and red pot with white slip. We used low fire glazes with frits that burst for  a variety of effects

Now what shall I plant in pots in late August in California?

Well geraniums to start because I trimmed some and the cuttings often workout!!
